There are two different methods to find out someone’s ring size. Bear in mind that if you are planning the ring to be a surprise, using this guide on your girlfriend will scuttle that!

Unfortunately there are no UK-based informational sites for diamond jewellery. There are plenty of diamond retailers that have some information on their websites but no single, complete, and objective resource.
There are some very good US-based sites however:

4. www.diamondcuttersintl.com (Fred Cuellar’s site, author of "How to Buy A Diamond”)
These sites all have forums where you can post a question and have it answered by experts who frequent the forums.

The Ten Commandments of Buying a Diamond Ring
- Thou shalt have a good working knowledge of the 4Cs plus the other 3Cs before visiting stores and merchants.
- Thou shalt be COMPLETELY sure what thy beloved would like to wear on her finger for the rest of her life (else shop for the ring setting together).
- Thou shalt SAVE responsibly for the cost of thee diamond ring so as to not enter marriage with a large debt around thee neck.
- Thou shalt establish a BUDGET and stick to it.
- Thou shalt always buy a diamond with a certified LABORATORY REPORT.
- Thou shalt determine that the diamond purchased is NOT a CONFLICT diamond.
- Thou shalt always verify the REPUTATION of thy diamond merchant.
- Thou shalt be aware of the INFLUENCING TECHNIQUES that may be used against thee by diamond salespeople.
- Thou shalt remember the tenet “everything is negotiable” and NEGOTIATE vigorously but fairly with good humour.
- Thou shalt get thy diamond ring INSURED.
